Introduction

“THE IMPACT OF THE ELEMENT SIX JUDGEMENT”

The recent case taken by members of the Element Six pension scheme against the trustees shone a light on the operation of Irish pension schemes, and wind-ups in particular. This seminar will look at the judgement and what it means for schemes and, particularly, trustees. It will also look at what issues arose during the case that were important in the final decision.

Presentation by:
Alan Broxson, Pension Fund Trustee, Irish Pensions Trust

Alan Broxson has already spent almost 49 years with Irish Pensions Trust. Although recently retired from most functions, he remains on the board of IPT and is still active as chairman of the trustees of a number of Pension Schemes.

A founding Fellow of the Irish Institute of Pensions Management, he is a past chairman of the Irish Association of Pension Funds and also a past chairman of the European Federation for Retirement Provision which represents the interests of schemes in Brussels.

He was a member of the National Pensions Board which preceded the current Pensions Board (recently renamed the Pensions Authority) and a member of the committee which drafted the Pensions Act 1990. He also served as a member of the Pensions Board. For some years he acted as an expert pensions adviser to ECOSOC in Brussels.
