Irish Pensions Magazine Spring 2014
Review
Aged 7, I was convinced that my Uncle Frank was a
magician after witnessing him stick a balloon to the
wall with a gentle flick of his head! All of a sudden
my uncle was raised to a new level since now he had
secrets to share with me. ‘Magic’ that was outside my
comprehension ... beyond any school curriculum .. and
that was just the start of it!
Later, skipping forward quite a few lessons and a good
slew of years, Frank opened my eyes to the world of
pensions, introducing me to equally mysterious terms
such as volatility, diversification, correlation, liquidity
and asset-liability matching. It was as fascinating and
perplexing as his static electricity demonstration.
Such was the measure of the man: engaged, patient,
knowledgeable, eager to educate yet happy to listen
as long as ‘you’re willing to learn’. He was a gentleman
who had an innate prowess in business. A principled
man, his projects typically aligned with his core values
of respect, hard work, honesty and integrity.
In my experience, he had the greatest sense of
responsibility towards his work. He treated every
decision with the highest degree of ethics and
commitment. He genuinely wanted his contributions
to make a difference in the lives of the plan members.
He particularly believed in the IAPF and its mission,
contributing actively and regularly.
Many of those whom Frank would have known as
friends / colleagues are actively engaged across the
pensions and investments industries today. I’m sure
they’ll concur that he was a unique person with a
subtle blend of charm, humour and motivation.
He’ll be missed hugely by his wife Louise, their four
children, brothers, sisters, extended family and friends.
More broadly his character and energy will be missed
by the pension community in Ireland.
I’ve never been able to stick a balloon to the wall
like Frank did, maybe his hair-quality was better than
mine, maybe it was his electric personality .. or maybe
he was indeed truly magical!
God rest his soul and watch over his immediate and
extended family and his friends.
